Biscuit had never seen the Eiffel Tower, but he certainly had opinions about it. Every evening his owner, Mrs. Hollis, read aloud from her well-thumbed Paris guidebooks, and the little West Highland terrier lay across her feet with one ear raised, as if he were quietly planning the itinerary and had reservations about the Louvre.
For her seventieth birthday, her son finally booked the trip, and her granddaughter added this porcelain Westie, dashing in a beret and scarf, so that Biscuit could come along in spirit. It travelled in her handbag the whole week, from the cafés of Saint-Germain to the steps of Sacré-Cœur. Now it sits on the windowsill overlooking her garden, its white coat bright against the glass, and inside its small compartment she keeps the Métro ticket from the afternoon she climbed all the way up to Montmartre. The real Biscuit has forgiven her for leaving him behind, though only after a week of sulking and a great many biscuits.
