Christmas Limoges Boxes

Christmas brings out the storyteller in all of us, and these little boxes are full of stories. Santa turns up in the most unexpected places here: on top of the Eiffel Tower, riding a train, even catching a wave on a surfboard. Alongside him you will find nutcrackers, snowmen, a gingerbread house, a Yule log for the French holiday table, a letter to the North Pole and a quiet nativity scene.

Every piece is a Limoges box, a small hand-painted porcelain box with a hinged lid, made in and around Limoges, France. Tuck a ring, a pair of earrings or a handwritten note inside, and the box becomes the gift and the gift wrap at once.

Many families add one new Christmas box each year and bring the whole collection out with the ornaments. Others give them as hostess gifts, stocking surprises or a keepsake for a baby's first Christmas. Joyeux Noël!

Santa Claus standing atop the Eiffel Tower

Rochard Christmas Santa atop Eiffel Tower Limoges Box

Paris is the last stop of the night, and Santa always saves it for the end. He parks the sleigh on the very top of the Eiffel Tower, catches his breath, and looks out over the rooftops of the city, every chimney glowing. Then he straightens his hat, wishes the whole sleeping city a joyeux Noël, and gets back to work.

Gingerbread house trimmed with candy canes

Gingerbread House with Candy Canes Hand-Painted Limoges Box

The gingerbread house on the corner has a rule: nobody nibbles before Christmas Eve. The candy cane posts stand like little guards, the icing snow stays perfectly white, and the gumdrop roof survives one more day of temptation. At midnight, the door swings open, and the smell of ginger and cinnamon drifts all the way down the lane.

Yule log dessert box

Hand-Painted Yule Log Christmas Limoges Box

In the kitchen of a farmhouse outside the village, the bûche de Noël waits on the sideboard. Grand-mère made it this morning, rolling the cake just so and dragging a fork through the chocolate to look like bark. The children have counted its little decorations twice. Dessert, she tells them, comes after the soup, and not one minute sooner.

Two snowmen standing side by side

Rochard Snowman Couple Limoges Box

They were built on the same snowy afternoon by two sisters who could not agree on anything except that snowmen should never be lonely. So there they stand together in the garden, scarves wound tight, watching the house lights come on one by one. When the wind picks up, they lean in a little closer.

Nutcracker ballet theatre

Rochard Nutcracker Ballet Theatre Limoges Box

The curtain goes up, the snow begins to fall on stage, and a hush settles over the tiny theatre. The Nutcracker steps forward, the Sugar Plum Fairy waits in the wings, and somewhere in the third row a little girl in a velvet dress forgets to breathe. She will remember this night for the rest of her life.

Santa Claus riding a surfboard

Rochard Surfing Santa Porcelain Limoges Box

Christmas Eve is long, and by the time Santa reaches the warm beaches of the southern half of the world, he has earned a little fun. The reindeer graze on the dunes while he grabs a board and paddles out. One perfect wave, he promises himself. Then the cookies and the stockings, and back to the North Pole before sunrise.

Deer standing in the snow

Christmas Deer in the Snow Porcelain Limoges Box

The forest is very quiet on the night before Christmas. A deer steps out from the pines and stands in the fresh snow, listening. Far away, too faint for anyone else to hear, there are sleigh bells. She lifts her head, tilts one ear toward the sky, and smiles in the way only a deer can.

Letter to Santa Claus

Christmas Letter to Santa Porcelain Limoges Box

Dear Santa, the letter begins, in careful pencil and slightly crooked lines. It asks for a red bicycle, a puppy if possible, and snow on Christmas morning for everybody. At the bottom, after a long think, there is a postscript: "P.S. I have been mostly good." Santa reads it twice, and laughs until his belly shakes.

Santa Claus riding a train on a brass track

Santa Riding a Train Rochard Limoges Box with Brass Track

This year the reindeer asked for a night off, and Santa, being a kind employer, agreed. So out came the old train from the workshop, shined up and ready to roll. All aboard, he calls to no one in particular, and the little engine puffs off across the snowy fields with a whistle and a cloud of steam.

Shopping bag decorated with a fireplace and stockings

Christmas Fireplace Shopping Bag Limoges Box with Stockings

The shopping is done, at last. The bag is heavy, the feet are tired, and the snow has started again. But on the side of the bag there is a fireplace with the stockings already hung, and that is a good reminder of why we do all of this. Home, a warm fire and a cup of chocolat chaud are waiting.

Nativity scene with the Holy Family at the manger

Rochard Small Nativity Scene Limoges Box

In the small hours, when the house is asleep, the candles on the mantel throw a soft light across the nativity. Mary and Joseph lean over the manger, and the whole room feels hushed and full of peace. It is the oldest story of the season, and somehow it is always the one that matters most.
