Description
Somewhere beneath the Rialto Bridge a gondolier is singing slightly off key, and nobody minds in the least. The water slaps gently against old stone, washing hangs between the windows above, and a couple in the back of the boat have stopped taking photographs to simply hold hands. It is the sort of evening people describe for the rest of their lives, usually with a little sigh. Later there will be gelato on the Zattere and a long walk back through alleys that seem to fold into one another.
Here that evening is kept for good. The slender black gondola rides the canal in rich painted colour, and the whole piece has the hush of Venice at dusk. It makes a wonderful honeymoon souvenir, an anniversary present for a couple who once floated through those same waters, or a dream-of-travel gift for the friend who has Italy at the very top of her list. The deep black hull against the painted water gives the piece a quiet, elegant drama, and it opens for a ring or a tiny glass bead from Murano.
