Description
Every April the lilac by Grand-mère Odile’s kitchen door fills with racket. Two blue birds argue over twigs, tug at a strand of wool left on the line, and finally settle. One morning there are eggs, small and perfect, and the household tiptoes around the back step for a fortnight as though the whole garden were holding its breath. The children learn to whisper, the cat is banished to the front garden, and even the postman is asked to use the other gate.
Here that waiting season is captured in miniature. A pair of bright blue birds sits close beside their eggs, heads tilted as though listening for the first tap from inside a shell. The colors are lively and fresh, the kind that look best in morning light on a windowsill. It would be a tender gift for an expectant mother, a spring birthday or a backyard birdwatcher who keeps binoculars by the sink. Place it among teacups on a dresser and it brings that birdsong feeling indoors all year.
