Description
Biscuit tins have a particular sound when the lid comes off, and Monsieur Gribouille could hear it from three rooms away. Up he would go, onto his hind legs, front paws paddling the air, curly tail spinning like a propeller. His owner, an elderly schoolteacher in Rouen, claimed she had never once given in. Her neighbours, who saw the crumbs on his whiskers, knew better. He also, they noted, had the most expressive eyebrows in all of Normandy.
This standing pug has exactly that hopeful posture, wrinkles and all. The painter has given careful attention to the folds of the face and the playful character that pug owners adore. Place it beside a framed photo of a real four-legged friend, on a bedside table, or at the front of a curio shelf where it can beg for attention from every visitor. It is the rare figure that makes people smile before they know why.
