Description
Nobody at the fromagerie on the rue Mouffetard ever caught the mouse, though everyone knew perfectly well he was there. Monsieur Petit swore it was a different mouse each year; his wife claimed it was the same one, simply growing rounder on Comté and the ends of the Brie. The regular customers took sides, and the debate grew livelier every winter.
On quiet afternoons, Madame Petit insisted, he could be found asleep on the wheel nearest the window, whiskers twitching at the scent of Roquefort drifting from the back room. This porcelain mouse dozes on a wedge of cheese just as she described, the very picture of a well-fed afternoon nap, paws tucked and tail curled. Give it to a cheese lover, a child who adores tales of country mice and town mice, or a friend who has more than earned a long rest. On a bedside table it is a gentle reminder to take life a little more slowly.
