Description
Late one winter night, a student in a garret on the Left Bank pushes aside her cold tea and opens Hamlet again. The candle gutters. She dips her pen, underlines a soliloquy for the third time, and writes something in the margin she will be embarrassed by in ten years and treasure in twenty. Outside, snow begins to fall on the rooftops, and somewhere below a street musician plays the same three bars over and over, as though he too is searching for the right words.
This miniature stack of classics is for anyone who has had nights like that. The spines include Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, an inkwell waits beside them, and a brass feather quill rises as if the writer has only stepped away for a moment. It is lovely on an English teacher’s desk, in a home library, or as a graduation present for a literature major.
