Rue des Lilas is a short street, and its youngest resident had asked for just one thing: a teddy bear of her very own. Santa wrote it down twice to be sure. But when he arrived on Christmas Eve, bear tucked under his arm and a small tree on his shoulder, he discovered that someone had been there before him. A little snowman from the garden stood beside the door, as if keeping watch all night.
Santa looked at the snowman. The snowman, as snowmen do, said nothing. Santa tipped his hat, set the bear and the tree in place, and left a carrot on the doorstep for the snowman’s trouble.
