Description
Deep in the beech woods behind her childhood home, Agnès knew a hollow where the lilies of the valley grew so thickly that the ground looked dusted with snow. Every spring her mother would take her there with a basket, and they would pick only a handful each, never more, so that the flowers would come back the following year. Decades later Agnès still cannot smell that sweet, green perfume without seeing the slanting light through the branches and hearing her mother humming beside her as they walked home.
This box brings that woodland memory indoors. Its lid and sides are painted with an elegant lily of the valley design, slender stems bowing under their tiny white bells among fresh green leaves, and it holds small treasures or jewellery inside: a pair of pearl studs, a locket, a ring removed before gardening. For her birthday or an anniversary it is an elegant choice, and a particularly tender choice for Mother’s Day, since the flower has long been associated with sweetness and the return of happiness. On a dressing table it looks quietly perfect.
