Every Easter Sunday, the dining room at Maison Delorme was transformed. The best linen came out of the cedar chest, the silver was polished until it shone, and in the centre of the long table, surrounded by tulips and sprigs of pussy willow, stood the great burgundy egg. Its deep red surface was garlanded with painted flowers, edged in gleaming gold. The children were allowed to lift its lid once, after lunch, to discover the little chocolate hidden inside.
