Description
Before dawn, before the bakers have lit their ovens, the birds of the Jardin des Plantes begin to sing. First a robin, then a blackbird, then a chorus of finches and sparrows so loud that the night watchman claims he can no longer hear himself think. By the time the gates open, the magnolias have unfurled another hundred blossoms and the whole garden feels newly made. Elderly regulars arrive with crusts of bread in their pockets and take their usual benches.
This egg gathers that morning chorus onto porcelain. Songbirds are painted amid flowers in bloom, their wings and breasts touched with soft color, the petals around them rendered as though freshly opened. The shape is timeless, smooth and pleasing in the hand, and inside it holds small treasures such as a pair of earrings, a tiny charm or a folded spring poem. It looks at home in a glass cabinet among other eggs, on a sunny windowsill or at the center of an Easter table surrounded by daffodils. However long winter lasts, it promises that birdsong is on its way.
