Description
Early morning in the Old City, and the limestone is still cool to the touch. A grandmother from Marseille, visiting for the first time in her long life, folds a small paper note no bigger than her thumb and presses it carefully into a crack between the ancient stones. Around her, voices rise and fall in prayer, sparrows dart along the ledges above, and the sun begins to turn the wall from grey to gold.
This hexagonal box honours that place of devotion and memory. The Western Wall is painted around its faces in rich colour, and inside waits a miniature Torah scroll that can be lifted out and held. It makes a moving gift for a bar or bat mitzvah, a wedding, a pilgrimage remembered, or a family celebrating a new home. Many people like to keep a written blessing or a small prayer folded inside beside the scroll.
