Description
Last day of term, and the classroom smells of glue sticks and sunscreen. Mrs Bertrand is taking down the paintings from the wall one by one, pretending she is not sad, when Lucie appears at her desk holding a small parcel behind her back. “It’s from all of us,” she whispers, “but I chose it.” Then she runs off before anyone can see her blush. Mrs Bertrand unwraps it that evening at her kitchen table, and for a long moment she simply sits there, holding it, while her tea goes cold beside her.
This little book says what children often cannot quite put into words. Its cover reads I Love My Teacher, and a pretty pink pencil accompanies it, as bright as a freshly sharpened one on the first day of school. It holds small items like paper clips, a spare eraser or a note from a grateful family. Teachers, tutors and head teachers alike will treasure it, the kind of present that stays on the desk year after year, long after the apples and the mugs are forgotten.
