Description
Somewhere over the Alps, the sleigh hit a pocket of wind and the great sack lurched. Out popped a teddy bear’s head, then a parcel tied in red, then another in green. Santa, glancing back, decided the bear had earned the view and let him ride the rest of the night with his chin resting on the drawstring, keeping a stern eye on the presents below as the villages slid past like lanterns in the dark.
That overflowing sack is the whole spirit of this piece: too many gifts, too much joy, and a small stowaway who refuses to be packed away. It would make a happy surprise for the family member who always overbuys at Christmas, or for a child who has just discovered that toys sometimes seem to have opinions of their own. Set it beneath a miniature tree on a side table and it looks as if Santa has only just stepped out of the room.
The details
- A Christmas toy sack modeled in porcelain, bulging with wrapped presents
- A teddy bear sits proudly on top of the bundle as if he were in charge of deliveries
- Fitted with a hinged lid over a small interior for a trinket or two
- Hand-painted in Limoges, France, with festive colors applied one careful brushstroke at a time
A merry pick for anyone who keeps a basket of old toys out every December. It looks especially at home tucked among stockings on a mantel.
