Description
Hold on tight! The bell clangs twice, the gripman leans on his lever, and the little car lurches up Powell Street with tourists hanging off the running boards and fog drifting in from the bay. At the top of Nob Hill, everyone gasps at the view: Alcatraz, the bridge, the whole glittering city. On the way down, the brakes squeal and a child shouts with delight. Nobody on board wants the ride to end, and half of them pay to go straight back up again.
