Description
Rain had just stopped over Westminster, and the pavements gleamed. A red bus swung around Parliament Square, Big Ben chimed the hour, and above the souvenir stalls a dozen Union Jacks snapped in the wind. Margaret, visiting from Ohio with her grandmother’s old map of London, stood very still and decided she would come back every spring for the rest of her life. She bought a small flag from the nearest stall and waved it all the way to Buckingham Palace.
The flag itself is the star of this box, its crosses of red and white crisp against deep blue, the whole design bright and confident. It makes a splendid gift for a British friend living far from home, a student back from a semester at Oxford, or someone planning a coronation-style garden party with bunting and scones. Place it near the teapot, or among other travel pieces collected on a lifetime of journeys. The colours are bold enough to brighten a dark bookshelf.
