Description
On the first of May in Paris, every street corner sprouts a little stall selling sprigs of muguet, the lily of the valley, wrapped in paper and tied with string. It is tradition to give one to someone you love, for luck and happiness in the year ahead. Antoine buys three: one for his mother, one for his neighbour who is ninety-two, and one, after a great deal of hesitation, for the girl who works at the bookshop on rue Mouffetard.
This heart carries that springtime custom in porcelain. Delicate white bells of lily of the valley are painted across it among fresh green leaves, and a pair of tiny ladybugs, long considered lucky in France, have settled among the flowers. It holds one small cherished trinket, perhaps an engagement ring at bedtime or a charm from a bracelet. It is a romantic gift for an anniversary, a wedding or a sweetheart, and a particularly lovely one to give on the first of May, when the whole of France is exchanging the same little white flowers for luck.
