Description
October in a village in the Dordogne: walnuts drop on the lane, woodsmoke drifts over the rooftops, and the old stone well at the end of the street looks more mysterious with every darkening evening. On the wall beside the bakery, a black cat appears each night at the same hour, golden eyes catching the light of the carved pumpkin that someone has left on the step. The children call her La Sorcière and dare one another to say good evening. On the last night of the month she sits a little taller, as if she knows exactly what evening it is.
This slender box captures that delicious shiver. A black cat sits tall and alert beside a grinning jack-o’-lantern, and behind them a deep night sky is flecked with stars. At more than three inches high, it stands out on a mantel among candles and gourds, or on a hall table where trick-or-treaters can admire it. It would charm a cat lover with a taste for the spooky season, a teacher who decorates her classroom every autumn, or anyone born on the thirty-first of October.
