Description
Nobody in Ballyvaughan admits to believing in leprechauns. Nobody, however, walks across the old fairy field after dark, either. Young Siobhán, who fears nothing, once spent a whole March evening crouched behind a hawthorn with a jam jar and a torch, determined to catch one and settle the question for good.
She caught a cold instead. But as she trudged home, damp and disappointed, she found three shiny coins on the stone step of her front door, and a footprint in the mud no longer than her thumb. Her father, reading the paper by the fire, claimed to know nothing about it. This merry fellow brings that wink of mischief to any room. Dressed in a green bright enough to rival the hills of Clare, he hugs his pot of coins as if daring you to reach for one. He makes a cheerful Saint Patrick’s Day centerpiece, a good-luck gift before an exam or job interview, or a present for anyone proud of their Irish roots.
