Description
Caw! The crows settle on the fence post at dawn, cocking their heads at the figure in the middle of the cornfield. All summer he has stood there, arms outstretched, straw poking from his sleeves, and all summer they have treated him less like a guard and more like a friend who never talks back. When harvest comes, the farmer’s children give him a new hat and a sunflower buttonhole, and carry him to the barn for the feast.
Autumn has a special warmth, all pumpkins, crisp apples and woodsmoke, and this scarecrow captures it in glowing colour. He makes a cheerful hostess gift for Thanksgiving, a sweet present for a farmer or gardener, or a seasonal treat for a friend who decorates the front porch each fall. Set him on a mantel among gourds and dried leaves, or on a kitchen windowsill where he can watch over the harvest bread.
