Description
Red lanterns swung along the narrow street in Belleville as the new year arrived, and Madame Chen’s bakery smelled of sesame, orange peel and warm dough. Her granddaughter Lina, home from Lyon for the week, set a small parcel beside the till and waited, pretending very hard not to watch while the queue shuffled and the kettle hissed behind the counter.
Inside stood a spirited porcelain horse, mane tossed as if caught mid-gallop, with a little brass leaf that lifted free like a lucky charm. Madame Chen, born under the same sign, turned it toward the window so the morning light could find it. A horse year for a horse woman, she declared, and let the first customer of the year hold the brass leaf for luck before setting it carefully back in place. By noon half the neighborhood had come to admire it, and nobody left without a sesame bun pressed into their hands.
