Description
Paint went missing from the studio on the Rue Mouffetard every night for a week. First a tube of cobalt, then a little cadmium yellow, then the good sable brush that Maïtre Duval refused to lend to anyone. His students blamed one another. The cat was questioned. Only the youngest apprentice, who stayed late one evening to finish a still life, saw the truth: two elves, no taller than a teacup, mixing colours on the master’s palette and arguing about the sky.
Our box catches them in the act. The pair perch on a painted palette, surrounded by paint tubes and a paintbrush, looking very pleased with their stolen afternoon. It is a delightful gift for an art student heading off to school, a teacher who keeps a classroom full of crayons and glitter, or a weekend watercolourist whose kitchen table is never quite clear. On a studio shelf beside jars of brushes, it looks as though it wandered in on its own and decided to stay.
