Description
A whistle echoed down the valley, and every child in the Alpine village ran to the window at once. The little train came puffing round the bend, snow flying from its wheels, carrying the post, the skiers and, on the twenty-third of December, the grandparents from Geneva with a trunk full of presents.
Everyone gathered on the platform, stamping their boots and waving mittens, while the stationmaster pretended not to be moved. This porcelain winter scene catches that magical arrival: a train winding through a snowy mountain village, cozy houses huddled close and a snowman keeping watch. It opens to a compartment for small treasures, perhaps a ticket stub or a tiny ornament. Give it to a train enthusiast, a collector of Christmas villages, or a family who spends every holiday in the mountains. Among the evergreen garlands on a mantel, it looks as though the whistle might blow at any moment.
