Description

Grand-mère Odile’s sewing machine stood beneath the window in the back bedroom, and its gentle rattle was the soundtrack of every school holiday. She hemmed trousers, let out waistbands, made costumes for the village carnival and once, famously, a whole wedding veil in a single weekend. Children were allowed to press the treadle only when she said so, and the reward for sitting still was always a scrap of ribbon or a button from the tin.

This little machine on its stand celebrates those makers. Give it to a dressmaker, a quilter with a fabric stash bigger than her closet, or a teenager who just finished her first pair of pajama pants and is wildly proud of them. It belongs on a sewing room shelf next to the pin tins, or on a desk where it can quietly remind someone that patience and a steady seam can fix almost anything, from a torn pocket to a bad week.

What makes it special

  • A sewing machine set on its own stand
  • Approximately 2″ x 1.5″ x 2.5″
  • Made by the Rochard house
  • Porcelain from Limoges, France, with every detail brushed on by hand

A meaningful thank-you for whoever altered the bridesmaid dresses the night before the wedding. Fabric shop owners, sewing teachers and costume designers all deserve one, ideally placed near the cutting table where they spend most of their happiest and most productive hours.
