Description
Theo was turning seven and had asked, with great seriousness, for a balloon that would never pop. His aunt took the request to heart and searched the shops along the canal for weeks before finding this slim oblong box, painted with a single cheerful balloon bobbing on its string.
On the morning of the party she rolled a tiny note inside, written in her best handwriting: a promise of a trip to the circus. Theo read it three times, then announced that the balloon was even better than he had hoped because it came with a secret. Years later the box still sits on his bookshelf. The note has long since been replaced by a silver chain from his grandfather, but the box has outlasted every balloon from every birthday since, and he still checks it now and then, just to be sure nothing has escaped. His little sister has already put in her request for one of her own.
