Description
Mothers keep everything. In a drawer of Hélène’s bureau there is a lock of baby hair tied with blue thread, a lopsided clay ashtray made in primary school, a birthday card covered in glitter and spelling mistakes, and the hospital bracelet from the day her first child was born. Her children tease her about it now that they are grown. Then, one Mother’s Day, her daughter arrives with a gift of her own and confesses, a little embarrassed, that she has started keeping a drawer too.
This heart is a home for those precious scraps of a life together. It bears the word Mother, simply and lovingly, and inside it can keep precious things, perhaps a first tooth, a tiny photograph or a folded note written in a child’s careful hand. Mothers and grandmothers will cherish it on Mother’s Day or a birthday, and it is a quietly moving choice for a new mother holding her baby for the first time. Displayed on a dresser, it says what we do not always remember to say out loud: thank you, for everything, always.
