Description
Down by the river the afternoon heat is thick and drowsy, and the only sensible thing to do is sink into the cool water up to your ears. A mother hippo knows this better than anyone. Beside her, a calf paddles in slow circles, blowing bubbles and occasionally bumping into her side just to make sure she is still there. She always is. A dragonfly lands on the calf’s nose, and he sneezes it away with great ceremony.
This box captures that easy closeness. Mother and baby swim together through painted water, their rounded forms rendered with obvious affection, and the piece works equally well as a trinket box or simply as something lovely to display. It is a thoughtful present for a new mother, a baby shower or a grandparent welcoming a first grandchild, and it brings a smile to any animal lover. Place it on a nursery dresser and it will keep watch, quietly, through many nights.
