Bells. That is what Clémence remembers first, more than the dress or the vows or the frantic search for the ring bearer. The bells of the little church in her grandmother’s village, ringing out across the vineyards as she and Antoine stepped out of the door into the September sunshine, so loud the starlings rose from the roof in one great swirl.
The church itself is tiny, barely big enough for ninety guests if everyone breathes in. Her parents married there. So did her grandparents, the summer after the war ended. On the day itself, half the village stood outside the door because there was no room inside, and nobody minded at all.
