Description
Same bench? he asked, and she only rolled her eyes, because where else would they go? Every Sunday for thirty-one years they had walked the gravel path past the fountain to the same slatted seat beneath the plane trees, the one facing the pigeons and the old man who sold roasted chestnuts in paper cones. They had argued there, made up there, and once, memorably, been rained on there for an entire afternoon.
Their daughter found this little porcelain couple, caught mid-kiss on a park bench, and wrapped it for their anniversary in tissue the color of autumn leaves. Now it waits on the hall table where they drop their keys. On the way out each Sunday, one of them always gives the tiny pair a fond nudge, as if to say, keep our seats warm, and the other pretends not to notice, smiling all the way to the corner.
