Description
Every year on the fourteenth of May, Juliette’s father leaves something on her pillow before dawn. When she was small it was a sugared almond; at sixteen, a ticket to Paris folded into an envelope. Now she is grown with a home of her own, and he still drives across town to slip a little parcel through her letterbox before she wakes. She pretends to be surprised every single time. The tradition has outlasted three cars, two cats and one very long winter in Strasbourg.
A heart like this is the sort of thing that would land on that pillow. Its surface is bright with colour and painted with intricate care, and the birthday theme makes its purpose wonderfully clear. Whether it ends up holding earrings on a nightstand or simply sitting where the window light catches it, it says that someone remembered, and remembered with love. Years later, it will still bring back the morning it arrived.
