Description
The market in Saint-Rémy opens at dawn on Wednesdays, and the first stall to sell out is always the radish man. His bunches are tied with raffia and still damp with dew, rosy at the shoulder and white at the tip, their leaves sticking up like little green flags. Locals eat them the old way, sliced and spread with salted butter on a crust of bread, standing right there among the crates while the church bells ring eight.
This cheerful porcelain radish celebrates that simple pleasure. It is a witty gift for a passionate cook, a vegetable gardener, or a friend whose kitchen shelves are already lined with ceramic fruit and copper pans. Set it on a window ledge above the sink, beside the salt cellar, or among cookbooks. Gardeners might like it in the potting shed, or on the desk where seed catalogues pile up all winter. A jewel or two fits snugly inside, too, which makes it rather a delightful surprise.
