Description
Every year on the twenty-third of December, Madame Lefèvre made her rounds of the village with a basket on her arm. Inside were jars of quince jam, a wedge of Cantal wrapped in waxed paper, sugared almonds, a bottle of cider and, for the children, gingerbread hearts tied with string. She left one at the door of the schoolmaster, one with the widow by the church, and one for the young couple who had only just moved into the mill house. Nobody ever saw her leave them, but everybody knew.
Generosity like hers is exactly what this basket of goodies celebrates. Offer it to a neighbor who always remembers birthdays, to a volunteer at the food pantry, or to the friend who sends the most thoughtful hamper every Christmas. On a kitchen dresser among jars and copper pans, or beside the real gift baskets waiting to be delivered, it looks perfectly at home, and it carries a quiet thank-you all on its own.
