Description
Off a rocky cove near Calvi, the water turns so clear that a swimmer can count pebbles four metres down. Imagine a girl named Margaux floating there with her mask fogging, when a dark shape slides beneath her, wide as a picnic blanket and silent as a cloud’s shadow. She forgets to breathe, then forgets to be afraid, and spends the rest of the afternoon telling her grandfather that she has seen something that flies underwater. Years later, the moment still returns to her whenever a gull’s shadow crosses a sunny pavement.
This little ray holds that same hush. Its black body sweeps outward in two soft curves, the tail trailing behind, and the slim barb can be lifted free and set beside it. Picture it on the desk of a diving instructor, next to a logbook full of salt-stained pages, or tucked into a shadow box with sea glass and a sand dollar at a seaside cottage. Its smooth, inky surface catches the light the way wet stone does, and the shape is so streamlined it almost seems to be moving.
