Description
Snip. The scissors sound enormous in the quiet kitchen, and Grand-mère Odile holds her breath as one pale ringlet drops into her cupped hand. Little Théo, perched on a cushion in his high chair, is far more interested in the spoon he is banging against the tray. Nobody else notices that his grandmother’s eyes have gone a little bright. Outside, the plane trees are just coming into leaf, and the whole morning smells of warm bread and spring rain.
She carries the curl upstairs as though it were a feather from an angel and lays it inside a small box painted in sugared-almond pink and powder blue, with tiny flowers scattered across the porcelain like confetti. The gold-tone clasp closes with a soft click. Years from now, when Théo is taller than all of them, she plans to set it in his palm and watch him laugh at how small he once was. Until then it waits on the nursery shelf, between a knitted rabbit and a framed photograph of the day he came home.
