Birthdays deserve a keepsake that outlasts the cake, and these little boxes are a party you can keep. You will find birthday cakes of every kind here, with a single candle, a shower of confetti, a Sweet 16 wish or a cheeky 39 Again. There are wrapped presents that never need unwrapping, a puppy popping out of a gift, a champagne toast, a balloon floating over a Happy Birthday greeting and even a teapot dressed as a cake. For the stargazers, there are zodiac signs too, from the Taurus bull and the Capricorn sea goat to the Year of the Snake.
Each one is a Limoges box, a small hand-painted porcelain box with a hinged lid, made in and around Limoges, France. Hide a ring, a pair of earrings or a birthday note inside and the box becomes part of the surprise.
They make thoughtful gifts for milestone birthdays, for friends who seem to have everything, and for anyone who likes to celebrate a little every year.
Rochard Happy Birthday Balloon Oblong Limoges Box
The balloon got away at the party, of course. It always does. It drifted up past the garden wall, over the church steeple and off toward the hills, while the birthday girl waved goodbye. Somewhere out there it is still floating, still saying Happy Birthday to anyone who happens to look up.
Rochard Birthday Cake Limoges Box Figurine with Balloons and Confetti
Three, two, one, surprise! The lights snap on, confetti flies, and the birthday guest stands frozen in the doorway with a very surprised face. Somebody starts singing, slightly off-key, and soon everyone joins in. The cake is a little lopsided from the excitement. Nobody minds. It is the happiest cake in the room.
Rochard 39 Again Birthday Cake Limoges Box Figurine in Pink
She has been thirty-nine for several years now, and she sees no reason to stop. Every spring the same pink cake arrives with the same single candle, and every spring her friends raise a glass and agree, with straight faces, that she has not aged a day. Some birthdays are simply worth repeating.
Rochard Sweet 16 Birthday Cake Limoges Box
Sixteen candles, one deep breath, and a wish she will not tell anyone, not even her best friend. The music is too loud, the balloons are tied to every chair, and her little brother has already sneaked a finger of frosting. Her mother watches from the kitchen door, wondering where the years went.
Rochard Puppy in a Wrapped Present Limoges Box
The box on the kitchen table wiggled. Then it yipped. Then the lid popped off and out came a small, very pleased face with two floppy ears. Best birthday ever, the little boy announced, and that was before the cake. The puppy agreed, mostly by licking everyone in sight.
Purple Present with Moons, Stars and Gold Bow Limoges Box
This present arrived at midnight, left on the windowsill by nobody in particular. It is wrapped in purple and scattered with little moons and stars, as if the night sky had decided to do some gift wrapping of its own. What is inside? Only the birthday girl gets to know, and she is not telling.
Happy Birthday Champagne Glasses Celebration Limoges
À ta santé! Two glasses meet in the middle of the table with a bright little clink. The bubbles rise, the candles flicker, and an old friend makes a speech that is far too long and full of stories that are only mostly true. Everyone laughs. Then they toast again, just to be sure.
Capricorn Sea Goat Artoria Zodiac Limoges Box
Capricorns, it is said, are patient climbers. This one began at the bottom of the sea, half goat and half fish, and has been climbing ever since: up out of the waves, onto the rocks, toward the highest peak in sight. A birthday is just another ledge on the way to the top.
Taurus Bull Zodiac Artoria Limoges Box
The Taurus bull does not rush. He plants his hooves, takes in the view, and decides he likes this meadow very much, thank you. On his birthday he asks for only three things: a good dinner, a comfortable chair and no surprises whatsoever. Naturally, his friends throw him a surprise party.
Rochard Chinese Zodiac Year of the Snake 2025 Limoges Box
When the Year of the Snake arrived, she curled up on a red cushion and declared herself guest of honor. Lanterns glowed, firecrackers popped in the street, and the whole neighborhood came by to wish her luck. She accepted it all with great dignity, then quietly helped herself to the dumplings.
Girl with Balloon Hand-Painted Limoges Box
She was given the balloon at the fair and has not let go of it since: not on the carousel, not at the ice cream stand, not on the long walk home. Tonight it will be tied to her bedpost, bobbing gently in the dark. Tomorrow she will be seven, and the balloon will be there to see it.
Teapot Limoges Box Shaped as a Birthday Cake
At four o'clock sharp, Tante Hélène brings out the birthday teapot. It looks so much like a cake that every year a new guest reaches for a knife, and every year she laughs until she has to sit down. Then she pours the tea, passes the real cake, and the party begins.
