Snow pressed against the windows of a little bakery in a village near the river, and inside, Madame Roux let her granddaughter choose the last shape of the evening. The girl skipped the stars and the hearts and pointed, very seriously, at the Santa cutter. When the tray came out of the oven, the cookie looked so jolly that nobody had the heart to eat him. He was propped against the sugar jar instead, and there he kept watch over the shop until New Year, nodding at every customer who came in from the cold.
