Mexico is a beautiful and culturally rich country. It has wonderful weather, even better food, and is one of the easiest countries to move to from the United States.

As with all countries, certain safety precautions should be observed while living there; Nevertheless, Americans continue to choose Mexico as a place to live, retire, vacation or own.

This flexibility is very generous for Americans and I have included Mexico on my list of easy countries.

The visa application process in Mexico varies depending on the type of visa. If you intend to stay for around 6 months, a temporary resident visa (FM3 visa) is a good option.

If you choose to stay longer, you will need a permanent residency visa (FM2 visa). Unfortunately, you are not allowed to work legally on a temporary visa, you must obtain a work permit.

For both temporary and permanent visas, there are certain financial requirements, but with a permanent visa, you can legally work in Mexico.

If you want to apply for permanent residency you don’t need to have a temporary residency visa first, but you need to meet at least one requirement: have close family connections in the country, apply for retired status, show proof of money to support yourself, or have temporary resident status for 4 years.

Then, you must pass a naturalization exam that tests your ability to speak Spanish and your knowledge of Mexican history and culture. Claiming nationality is, of course, possible through parentage or by marrying a Mexican citizen.
