A greater focus on the effects of social media on users has led people to question its psychological and social impact, particularly on teenagers.
While companies like Facebook push the narrative that its platform is intended to bring people together, many consumers fear that teenagers — who spend more time on social media in general and tend to be more impressionable — are absorbing the negative effects instead. It seems that a number of American teenagers agree.
About a third of them, ages 13 to 17, feel social media has a mostly positive effect on people, but about a quarter say the effect is mostly negative, according to a new study from Pew Research. The reasons vary, but as this chart from Statista shows, almost half of those who believe the effect is mostly negative say it’s because they think social media causes bullying or hurts their relationships; unfortunately, the other reasons are no longer comforting.

Watch: I quit social media for a month – and it was the best choice I ever made Does social media have a positive or negative effect on our daily lives? Do you think social media is a waste of time or is it beneficial for us?
There has been an ongoing debate whether or not social media affects us in our daily lives negatively or positively. Social media has its pros and cons just like everything else does, sometimes the good comes out the bad way and the bad can come out the good way. With my time being on social media it has dried up only because I allow it to be. Sometimes you have to take a break to get back in touch with reality and not worry about who has the newest car, shoes, or purse because none of that matters or at least shouldn’t affect you and self esteem. With me deciding to take a break from social networks I realized that I was happier and less hard on myself because I don’t compare myself to that of someone who only posts GOOD things that are happening in their lives. It is important to have a good self-love relationship with yourself so that you will not need to get validation from others especially when they are strangers and their opinion about you does not matter except for you. Another point to bring up is that we have control over what we decide to follow on social media which will not make us feel less or like we have to compete with others or feel like you have to be someone else. than ourselves.
In order to get a better understanding we should do our research on the negatives and positives of social media. How social media is affecting us positively, by Varun Sharma and What the science suggests so far about the impact of platforms such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram on your mental well-being, by Jessica Brown are great articles to read to gain an understanding of. both sides when it comes to the positives vs the negatives.
Solution: Article Social Media Its Impact With Positive And Negative
In How Social Media Affects Us Positively Varun says that “It is essential that you verify sources and truths, rather than taking everything you see as fact.” And this is an important thing to do because you can’t always take everything you see, hear, or have been told and just run with it because it may not be true or misinterpreted. People have great power as far as what they decide to show on social and share as well and of course they will not share their struggles in life because some people want to show an image to others. There are a couple of positive things that Varun brings up for example in the part of the article, Social Media Can Benefit Mental Health Too Varun explains that there is a platform for people who struggle with mental health there are different resources to watch or read for free. While his examples in his article show many positive effects of social media we will change to the negative ones.
In the article What the science suggests so far about the impact of platforms like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram on your mental well-being, Jessica breaks down each topic and how social media does not help some people who are struggling. Anxiety, depression, and they bring a lot and it seems that social media is a number one thing that provokes it. Jessica mentions “700 students found that symptoms of depression, such as low mood and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, were linked to the quality of online interaction.” Jessica points out that there are hundreds of people who struggle mentally when it comes to social networks. People are not always able to control what they show or promote on social media and that can quickly cause a person to put themselves.
Social media can either be a negative effect on your life or a positive effect on your life depending on how you let it play a part in your life. I think it’s important to let people know that we are in control of who we see and what creators or influencers we want to see as well.
