Laura Kelly says 26 Kansas nonprofits will receive more than $4 million in community service tax credits to improve and expand fundraising efforts for education, health care, child care and housing projects.
“The Community Services Tax Credit program is a great tool we can use to support our state’s nonprofit organizations and strengthen the essential services they provide to their communities,” said Governor Kelly. “My administration will continue pioneering initiatives like CSP to improve Kansas’ access to quality education, health care, child care and housing to make Kansas the best state for families and businesses to call home.”

According to Governor Kelly, the CSP program provides a 70% tax credit to qualified donors in rural communities of less than 15,000 residents and a 50% credit to larger communities. For example, she said, a donor who makes a $1,000 gift in a rural community will receive a $700 tax credit when they file their state taxes, bringing the net cost to the donor to just $300. She said CSP will distribute $1 million in awards for child care and early childhood development projects, particularly for services to the under-5s.
Strategies To Strengthen The Earned Income Tax Credit
Governor Kelly said CSP is a very competitive program. She said the award-winning nonprofits were selected through a competitive scoring process.
According to the governor of Kansas, in 2021 26 of the 55 requested projects received CSP funding. It said this represents 47% of the total funds requested.

TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly today awarded $4.1 million in Community Service Tax Credits (CSP) to support the funding efforts of 29 nonprofit organizations across Kansas that improve local access to quality child care, health care, education, the arts and housing . The administration continued its commitment to addressing the child care shortage by including nearly 1 million USD specifically for non-profit organizations that increase the availability of childcare options.
“It’s no surprise that the best solutions to problems in Kansas communities often come from local nonprofits with roots in those communities,” said Governor Kelly. “That’s why we’re doing everything we can to improve the work of our nonprofits through programs like Community Service Tax Credits.”
CSP tax credits have been available in the Sunflower State since 1994. For example, a donor who makes a $1,000 gift in a rural community receives a $700 tax credit when they file their state taxes, bringing the net cost to the donor to just $300.
This year, CSP will help five different counties build new or renovate existing child care facilities. Communities across the country will be helped to improve health care facilities or purchase new diagnostic equipment; create housing options for low-income or homeless Kansans; update libraries; expand access to art and cultural objects; provide new shelters for children in foster care and victims of domestic violence and sexual violence; and create innovative public meeting spaces.

“The ingenuity of this year’s honorees to improve the quality of life in their communities is impressive,” said Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland. “Supporting these local initiatives allows the state to continue to attract new businesses to invest in Kansas.” Strong communities provide a stable workforce, which benefits the economy as a whole.
Award-winning nonprofits were selected through a highly competitive, score-based selection process. This year, 29 out of 55 requested projects received funding from the SDS.
