It is an honor to bestow this title on Leslie. I recently sat down with her to learn more about her credit career and reveal some of the insights and lessons she’s learned since getting started.

Leslie: I worked for a construction company that was relocating, and I saw an ad in the newspaper [for credit jobs]. I had worked in a department store credit department over the holidays, so I thought, “Why not give it a try?” As it turned out, I was the only applicant with both credit and construction experience, even though my experience was very limited at the time.

I told my future boss, “I can’t do it. I can learn. If you give me a chance, I promise I won’t let you down.” He jumped at the chance. Talk about serendipity! Trench Shoring Company is where I was meant to be.

In many aspects! My degree is in political science and I was originally going to go to law school, but the timing was never right. I love being exposed to the law in this job, mechanics lien law is so complex and interesting.

The boss of my company taught me many valuable lessons about business. Ultimately, I decided this was my career and I didn’t want to go to law school. TSC is challenging and fun, and it allows me to spend plenty of time with my family.

Our success is measured by our high collection rates. Of course, I can only be as good as the people in my department! We do our best work when we work as a true team.

We never throw cans aside – we are all willing to help each other and lend a helping hand when needed. We can always improve communication, but I have to say, we are a great team now.

We try to get as much customer information as possible up front. We actually treated it like private detectives. We do credit checks and Google searches to find anything we can.

Identifying risks upfront allows us to know how much or how little is needed to monitor the account. Of course, we have a great partner – just sending the initial notification reduces a lot of the risk.

This is not for the faint of heart! You have to be able to be aggressive when needed but still win over your customers. It’s a delicate balance that I’ve continued to refine and hone over the years.

I love being a closer person! I enjoy the challenge of collecting accounts that others may not have collected. If you’re up for the challenge, give it a try. It’s never boring.

Give people a chance – things are not always what they seem. Treat everyone well and win over your sales team. It sounds cliché, but there is no “I” in teamwork. This is a fact.

Be grateful. Open your eyes to new ideas and always try to start from a “yes” perspective.

I enjoy listening to music, hiking, taking barre classes, doing charity work, spending time with family, gardening, and traveling. Oh, and never underestimate the power of a good book!

I thought I would either become a lawyer or work in some kind of sales job. I’m a closer and I love the chase.

I think it will be strong after the pandemic. We will have to adapt to new technologies in construction software. We are ready for any challenge!

Information technology has changed so much! When I first started, we couldn’t even evaluate credit. Everything was done instinctively, and although I still rely heavily on instinct, the amount of information available was a game changer.

Credit card and ACH payments are great too, we’ve been very successful with both. They are huge collecting tools.
