However, whether or not your insurance plan covers specific gender-affirming treatment depends on your state, employer, and plan benefits.
High Turnover At Nursing Homes Threatens Residents’ Care
Major insurance companies recognize transgender-related care as medically necessary and have policies in place that define coverage criteria. However, at least 20 states have passed laws that limit gender-based care coverage to people under 18. And some transgender people may still be denied coverage for hormone therapy or transition-related surgery by insurers.
According to a June 2022 estimate, approximately 1.6 million Americans at least 13 years of age identify as transgender.
According to the American Medical Association, health insurers typically cover a range of medically necessary services that confirm gender or treat gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is a condition that occurs when someone experiences a discrepancy between the gender they were assigned at birth and the gender they currently identify with.
Gender-affirming care is the term most medical groups use to treat dysphoria. This care may include hormones, surgery, or counseling. Care of one’s gender identity aligns with gender expression in appearance, anatomy, and voice.
Claims, Billing And Payments
In 2010, the federal Affordable Care Act banned health insurance discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Before the law, medically necessary gender-affirming surgeries and hormones were often not covered by insurers.
The 2022 rule from the Biden administration noted that “category coverage exclusions or limitations for any health care services related to gender transition are discriminatory,” and that a covered entity cannot deny or limit coverage or claims or pay for cost-sharing related to them. gender transition.
However, insurance is regulated at the federal and state level depending on whether it is an ACA, public, or employer plan, so the rule does not apply equally to all insurers. Coverage and requirements vary by state, employer, plan type, and more.
