The chart below shows some broad categories with more specific examples. If you want to work with policymakers themselves, you can work in a government agency at the local, state, or federal level. The PKG Center is MIT’s social impact employment office. They have two great funding options to pursue science policy work.
This program places graduates from across the Institute in summer internships in Washington, DC at government agencies, non-governmental organizations, think tanks, and private consulting firms. MIT pays for housing and stipends.

MISTI matches MIT students with training, research and teaching opportunities abroad. MISTI will pay for your accommodation, flights and allowances.
You can certainly use this funding for a science policy opportunity, although you may have to find your own host and submit your plan to the appropriate MISTI country coordinator.
This course allows students to earn a stipend and/or academic credit for professional training within planning practice in the United States. The course provides students with an opportunity for experiential learning – learning through practice and reflection. The class meets three times a semester to reflect as a group. Students complete short reflection assignments throughout the semester.
DUSPCareers has a list of training resources, but you can suggest your own. Additional tuition assistance is only available during the fall/spring semesters, but you can take courses for credit in the fall.

Boston/Cambridge Academic Credit Scholarships provide MIT students of any major with class credit and expanded exposure to the region’s thriving culture of national, state, and political activity and local policy.
Position opportunities are available in political campaigns, congressional offices, legal services organizations, human service organizations, and advocacy groups and organizations that address issues such as education, public health, the environment, homelessness, and more. Internships typically last one semester, with students required to work 6-15 hours on site each week.
This training is available within the central branch of government from the local to the federal level. You can improve the technical infrastructure of the City of Boston, do community planning in coastal areas, or improve the US Census. The City of Boston’s innovation and technology team ensures that the networks, computers and systems the City uses are secure and efficient. They also manage the City’s website and technologies aimed at service delivery. One recent MIT student who completed an internship with the office over the summer said it was a valuable opportunity to help local government adapt their technology.
The main goal of this internship program is to expand participation in the marine and coastal professions by providing training and mentoring to the next generation of scientists, decision makers and citizens. Consultants are expected to engage faculty in fieldwork, analysis, research and/or public outreach and engagement. CEI trainees focus on place-based research, extension, education and/or communication that respects and integrates local ways of knowing.
Job titles and responsibilities will vary by field of study and position/series. The Census Bureau provides quality data that helps Americans better understand our country—its population, resources, economy, society and culture.
You can apply for this position on your own or through the MIT Washington D.C. Internship Program. One recent MIT student who did this internship said the department was very friendly and full of public servants who really care about their work.

The Department of Energy’s Office of the General Counsel’s Undergraduate Program provides an exciting opportunity for college students to gain first-hand exposure to contemporary issues in energy law and policy. Interns will have the opportunity to attend meetings, observe hearings, and learn firsthand about the work of DOE and the Office of the General Counsel.
Employees can expect assignments on a range of energy-related issues, such as energy efficiency, energy law enforcement, alternative technologies, and increasing transparency, accountability and efficiency within DOE. Graduate students will have a mix of executive and administrative responsibilities, and can perform a wide range of tasks.

There are many opportunities on Capitol Hill and the House or Senate. These jobs often lead to full-time employee positions. Law school graduates gain practical experience working for a State Senator, State Representative or Committee. The internship program provides students with a better understanding of public service and the legislative process in Massachusetts. Interns are unpaid volunteers; however, you can apply for credit or funding for this position through the MIT PKG Center or course catalog 17.902 if you are an undergraduate.

The Science, Space, and Technology Committee typically hires graduate students for four-month periods each fall, spring, and summer. The training provides a unique opportunity to observe the legislative process first hand.
Staff are asked to work with staff to help prepare for committee meetings and markups. Additionally, graduates are essential to the day-to-day running of the office including tasks such as answering phones, greeting visitors, and filing official documents. Interns also work directly with staff on major research projects and journalistic issues. To enhance the learning experience, graduate students are encouraged to attend lectures, briefings, and other events on Capitol Hill that match their interests.

The ACS Science Policy Fellowship Program places one Science Policy Fellow (SPF) with the ACS External Affairs and Communications (EAC) team for 1-2 years. SPF works with experienced EAC staff in areas of importance to the chemical industry, including: federal funding for scientific research; science, technology, engineering and mathematics education; green chemistry; environmental policy; and regulatory policy. SPF also supports the ACS member-driven policy development process and encourages members to engage their elected officials and other policy makers.
AAAS seeks to “advance science, engineering, and innovation worldwide for the benefit of all people.” There are a number of tutorials for students of different backgrounds and skills. On-the-job training can lead to full-time employment.
